Aileen Rizo

Mark your calendar for this discussion of standing up for justice when, as Aileen discovered, male co-workers with less experience were paid more for the same work. Aileen, a Latina math educator, describes her journey as an equal-pay advocate that resulted in hearing and decision
at the U.S. Supreme Court. Aileen received assistance in her legal defense from the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF). It is our honor to hear Aileen Rizo describe her groundbreaking wage discrimination case.

Aileen gives her equal-pay story in such a thoughtful, clear and articulate manner. She made me feel I was riding the ups and downs with her. In the first third of the presentation she credits those who played important roles in the fight for equal pay–her summary ought to be a part of every intro to poli-sci class. While Aileen’s legal journey leads to a landmark decision for women, I feel that Yovino v. Rizo is applicable for anyone who has been treated unfairly due to prior salary being a basis for compensation. Well done!
